Driving Towards a Circular Economy: The EU's Vision for End-of-Life Vehicles

The European Union is taking important steps to protect the environment and support innovation with its new regulation for End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). This is a major change for the automotive industry. It helps create a circular economy where we value and reuse resources. This regulation gives a clear direction for how cars will be designed, made, and recycled in the future.

A central pillar of this new framework is the introduction of mandatory targets for recycled plastics in new vehicles, progressively aiming for 25% recycled content within a decade. To support these goals, the regulation significantly strengthens the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principle, making producers accountable for the entire vehicle lifecycle. This encourages smarter, more sustainable design from the outset. Furthermore, a new digital "circularity vehicle passport" will enhance transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain, ensuring resources are managed with maximum efficiency.
At AGC, we are closely monitoring the evolution of this legal framework. Our commitment is to ensure our products consistently align with these new standards, supporting our partners through this transition. We recognize that this regulation will have implications for the entire automotive replacement glass value chain, from manufacturing to the final fitting process. We see the current focus on plastics as the first step. A wider approach will follow, which will later include other important materials, like glass.

In anticipation of this future, AGC Automotive Replacement Glass is already at the forefront of sustainable innovation. We are not merely waiting for new rules; we are actively shaping the future of automotive recycling. Through pioneering recycling projects developed in close collaboration with major industry partners, we are exploring solutions that span the manufacturing, commercial, and fitting sectors. This proactive leadership demonstrates our unwavering commitment to sustainability and our readiness to lead the industry toward a greener, more circular future.
