50 shades of green: how are OEMs planning to play their part in a more responsible future?

The recognition of the urgent need for a more sustainable future is now widely acknowledged by key players in our sector. AGC ARG is making praiseworthy strides in this area, yet the array of solutions from car manufacturers is diverse, sometimes even seemingly contradictory, yet collectively contributing to a spectrum of eco-friendly efforts:

Electric initiatives: once seen as the sole alternative to traditional fuels, electric vehicles (EVs) have seen a surge in adoption, boosted by early adopters and governmental incentives. However, market uncertainties have led to a reassessment of commitment to this technological shift. As a result, we are seeing divergence in the industry, with some companies dialling back or abandoning their electric projects, while others are doubling down. In the mix are two additional factors: hybrid proponents who favour a compromise solution, and advocates of retrofitting which enables older vehicles to meet new emission standards.

Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) innovations: despite the EU reaffirming the ban on CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035, ICE is not obsolete; it’s evolving, propelled by surprising and yet firm legislative demands. With some retreat from electric strategies, it would be short-sighted to dismiss the advances in traditional engines. From ultra-efficient motors to biofuels that approach carbon neutrality (with EU sources claiming they will be exempt from the ICE ban in 2035), these developments could offer a third way alongside fossil fuels and EVs. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are also making a comeback, widening the scope of alternatives to the EV movement.

While these two trends are distinct, they are not exhaustive when it comes to the industry’s innovations. Visionaries all across the sector, including those at AGC with our cutting-edge technologies, are driving towards a greener future. It’s a collective effort that deserves recognition. Together, we are crafting the world of tomorrow.
